2.3.6.2. Martha Muir Riddell (1892-1925)

Martha Muir Riddell was born on 17 May 1892 at 6 Brown Street in Hamilton, Scotland. She was the second child of Francis and Janet (Kerr) Riddell. In 1901 she lived with her parents and older sibling at 28 Woodside Walk in Hamilton and her father was transitioning into the bakery business.

When the 1911 census was enumerated Martha was living with her parents and siblings at Gertrude Cottage on 7 Scott Street in Hamilton. Her father would later buy that property becoming one of the few descendants of Robert and Henrietta (Brown) Muir to own property at that time. Martha worked as a shopkeeper in the fruit business.

Martha married Arthur Craig on 30 December 1924 at her parents home according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. She was 32 years old. Arthur was a farmer.

The couple was married less than 6 months when Martha died on 14 June 1925 of phthisis pulmonalis, or tuberculosis. According to her death registration, she had suffered from the disease for two and a half years. She died at Gertrude Cottage and was 33 years old. Arthur Craig never remarried.
