2.3.5.2. Alexander Paton (1884-1915)

Alexander Paton was born on 22 October 1884 at 39 Carrick Street in Ayr, Scotland, to Matthew and Helen (Davidson) Paton. Matthew's father was a forester, employed to guard the forest and its game against poachers and trespassers. Alexander's mother died in 1890 of a bilious fever. The next year when the census was enumerated Matthew Paton's family lived on 38 Fort Street in Ayr. He was a 34-year-old widower with three children under the age of 6. Agnes Watson was a servant in the home and worked as a housekeeper. Matthew Paton died in 1895 of phthisis pulmonalis, or tuberculosis, leaving his children orphans.

In 1901, Alexander and his siblings were living with Alexander Davidson, his mother's brother, and his family in Ayr on 11 Carrick Street. Alexander was an apprentice upholsterer. By 1909 he had moved to Glasgow and married Martha Muir Forsyth on 8 January 1909 at her home on 230 Holm Street in Glasgow according to the forms of the Church of Scotland.

They had a daughter, they named after Martha's mother, Elizabeth Riddell Paton, in 1909. They called her Lizzie. In 1911 the family lived on 10 Silvergrove Street in the Calton district of Glasgow. Alexander was an upholsterer.

He died on 17 March 1915 at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow of tuberculosis of the lungs. He was 30 years old and had lived with Martha at 222 Holm Street before his death.  He was also a member of the 1/5th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, which shipped out to Gallipoli, Turkey, two months after Alexander's death.
