2.3.2.4. Susan Dundas (1894-1994)

Susan Dundas was born on 3 August 1894 at 5 Garngad Road in Glasgow to John Dundas and Ellen (Miller) McLachlan, who was a widow. Her parents were not married at the time of Susan's birth. Her birth was later re-registered in the District of Proven on 2 March 1948 for some unknown reason.

In 1901 Susan was living with her uncle and his wife, Daniel and Catherine Dundas, at 89 Carrick Street in Glasgow. They had no children of their own at the time. When the 1911 census was enumerated, Susan was a working as a servant for Mrs. Mary R. F. Smith, who lived at Springfield House in Rosemarsh, Dumbartonshire.

Sometime before 1918, Susan made her way to East Kilbride Parish and at the time of her marriage was working as a domestic servant. She married John Findlay, a water committee employee and Private in the Highland Light Infantry, on 8 June 1918 at the Manse in East Kilbride, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland.

She and John had four known children.

On 4 September 1950, Susan and her youngest daughter, Jessie Dundas Findlay boarded the Donaldson Line's S/S Lismoria in Glasgow. They arrived in Montreal on 12 September. When they crossed the border of the United States, they indicated their destination was 4540 -- 34th Street, San Diego. Susan and John Findlay's son, John Riddell Findlay, had immigrated to Canada in 1944 and was living in British Columba at the time of their trip. Perhaps they met him and his family for a vacation?

Donaldson Line's S/S Lismoria

Susan and her daughter returned to Montreal and boarded the Donaldson Line's S/S Laurentia in October. They traveled first class and arrived in Glasgow on 16 October 1950. The family lived at 8 Kirkton Park in East Kilbride at the time of the trip.

John died in 1972 and Susan died on 8 February 1994, a few months before her 100th birthday. She had been living with a daughter and son-in-law, Thomas and Jessie (Findlay) Mabbott, at 6 Kirkliston Road in South Queensferry before her death.  However, she died at 14 Muirhouse Parkway in Edinburgh, which is now the site of Silverlea, a residential elder care facility. Susan (Dundas) Findlay died of congestive cardiac failure.

2.3.2.1.1. Charles Findlay (1912-1986)

Charles Findlay was born on 25 April 1912 at 9 George Street in Hamilton Parish, Lanarkshire. His parents were Charles and Isabella Laird (Muir) Findlay and he was at least the fourth in a long line of Charles Findlays who named their son Charles.

On 7 January 1938 he married Mary Ann McDermott at St. Joseph's Church in Blantyre. St. Joseph's was a Roman Catholic church. Mary Ann was 28 years old and three years older than Charles. Her parents were John and Mary Ann (Boyle) McDermott and they lived at 45 Nursery Place, Blantyre.

At the time of their marriage, Charles was serving as a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scot Fusiliers. He was stationed at North Camp in Aldershot, England, some 30 miles southwest of London. I have not been able to locate details of Private Findlay's military service during World War II, but the 2nd Battalion served with 17th Infantry Brigade. The brigade was sent to France in late 1939 as an independent unit to join the British Expeditionary Forces and had to be evacuated from Dunkirk. Many men were captured and spent the rest of the war in German prisoner of war camps.

Those from the brigade that escaped Dunkirk then joined the 5th Infantry Division and spent the next two years performing home defense duties.

The brigade was detached from the 5th Division and sent to Africa where they fought in the battle of Madagascar. They rejoined the division and next saw service in Italy, participating in the fierce and bloody fighting at Anzio in 1944. In July of that year they were transferred to Palestine to refit. In early 1945 they were sent to Belgium to join General Barnard Montgomery's 21st Army Group. They participated in the invasion of Germany near the end of the war.

Charles Findlay worked as a steel worker in the 1950s. He lost his wife, Mary Ann, in 1952 and never remarried. He died at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow of renal failure and hypothermia on 27 January 1986 at the age of 73. He was a retired cleansing laborer and lived at 101 West Graham Street in Glasgow before his death.

On 25 April 1924 Martha married Charles Findlay, who was a 35-year-old widower. She was 21 and was not working. They were married according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Their only daughter, Mary Parker Findlay, who was named for her maternal grandmother, was born on 26 November 1925 at Burnside Cottage in Springwell.

The next year Martha (Walker) Findlay died on 5 May 1926 at the County Hospital in Motherwell of meningitis pyogenic, which is a brain fever or cerebrospinal meningitis caused by bacteria. She was 23 years old at the time of her death, leaving her husband with a 6-month-old infant. Charles Findlay never remarried.

2.3.2.1. Isabella Laird Muir (1891-1921)

Isabella Laird Muir was born on 16 October 1891 in Blantyre Parish. She was the illegitimate daughter of Christina Muir, a cotton factory worker. Isabella's father's name was not listed on her birth registration. She had an older half-brother, William Gartshore, who was also illegitimate. Christina had another illegitimate daughter, who was named Elizabeth in 1897. It is not known if she was a full or half-sister to Isabella.

In 1901 Christina and her three children lived in Fore Row, which was housing for Blantyre Works employees. No occupation was listed for Christina at the time the census was taken. In 1905, Christina's younger sister died, leaving her husband, Joseph Barr, with three young children.  Christina began keeping company with her brother-in-law and had a child with him in 1907. They married three years later. In 1911 the blended family lived at 293 Glasgow Road and Isabella was working as a weaver in a factory.

On 14 July 1911 Isabella Laird Muir married Charles Findlay at her mother and step-father's home. She and Charles had five children between 1912 and 1920. Isabella died on 8 February 1921 in the family's Burnside Cottage home, of myocarditis, which is often caused by a viral infection. She had been sick for four months before her death.

2.3.2.1. Charles Findlay (1889-1951)

Charles Findlay was born on 27 February 1889 in the village of Kirkton, East Kilbride. He was the oldest child of Charles and Henrietta (Riddell) Findlay. His mother died in 1904; and when the 1911 census was enumerated, he was a boarder in the home of Joseph and Christina Robson at 51 Pollack Street in Hamilton. The home had two rooms with one or windows and that living space was shared by ten people. Charles worked as a colliery carter.

Three months later, Charles married Isabella Laird Muir. She was a 19-year-old domestic servant and lived with her stepfather, mother, and half-siblings at 293 Glasgow Road in Blantyre. Charles and Isabella were married in her home according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland.

After their marriage, they lived at 9 George Street in Hamilton where their first son, yes, another Charles Findlay, was born. By the time their daughter, Christina, was born, they lived at Burnside Cottage in Springwell, Blantyre Parish. Charles Findlay lived there until his death.

By the time his daughter, Isabella, was born in 1918, Charles had been drafted into the British Army. He served as a private in the 5th (R) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.

Isabella (Muir) Findlay died in 1921, leaving Charles with five children under nine years old. He married Martha Walker, a 21-year-old woman, who lived at 17 Netherfield Place. Her father was a coal miner. They married according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland at the church manse in Stonefield. Charles and Martha had one daughter, Mary Parker Findlay in 1925. Martha, his second  wife, died in 1926. Charles never remarried.

2.3.2. Charles Findlay (c1847-1927)

Charles Findlay was born about 1847 in East Kilbride Parish to Charles and Mary (Russell) Findlay. His father was a hand loom weaver and by the age of 14 Charles was also weaving cotton on the looms in the family home. Charles lived his entire life in the parish of East Kilbride in the villages of Kirkton and East Kilbride. Looms powered by steam idled many weavers in what previously had been a cottage industry. By 1881 Charles was a general laborer and no longer weaving cotton.

He married Henrietta Riddell just weeks after her father's death on 17 February 1888 in the village of Kirkton according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. He was 41 years old and working as a road surface man.

In 1891 the family lived on Main Street in the village of East Kilbride and had two children, Charles and Martha. They followed the Scottish convention for naming children:

Four years later Charles Findlay paid 2 pounds 10 shillings annual rent for their cottage on Main Street. The owner was a stationer who lived in Berwick. By 1901 the family had moved to Strathaven Road. Charles continued to work as a road surface man.

Martha Riddell died in 1904, leaving Charles with three children under 10 years old. In 1911 Charles and four of his children were living at 10 Main Street. He continued to live there until his death on 28 October 1927 at the age of 80 years old. The cause of death was listed simply as senility. He was retired at the time of his death.

2.3.2. Henrietta Riddell (1855-1904)

Henrietta Riddell was born on 20 August 1855 in the village of Kirkton, East Kilbride, to John and Martha (Muir) Riddell. She was their second child. In 1861 the family was on Main Street in the village of East Kilbride and another child had joined the family.

Ten years later, Henrietta was 15 years old and worked as a servant in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ogg in Glasgow. Mr. Ogg was a master draper and employed 50 people. The family had two live-in servants, including Henrietta.

Her mother died in 1876 and Henrietta returned to East Kilbride sometime after that. When the 1881 census was enumerated Henrietta lived with her father and three younger brothers, Robert, Francis and Thomas. She was employed as a domestic servant.

Her father died on 26 January 1888 and just a few short weeks later, at the age of 32, Henrietta married Charles Findlay, a 41-year-old bachelor from East Kilbride, who had come from a weaving family and had been a weaver in this youth. At the time of their marriage and because of the decline of the hand loom weaving industry, he was a general laborer. I have wondered if Henrietta's father did not approve of Charles Findlay.

Charles and Henrietta had two children by the time the 1891 census was taken. The family lived on Main Street in the village of East Kilbride.  Four more children were born between 1892 and 1900. In 1901 the family lived on Strathaven Road in East Kilbride.

Henrietta (Riddell) Findlay died on 28 October 1904 of cardiac disease. She was 49 years old and had suffered from heart troubles for three years. Her youngest child, Alexander Findlay was 4 years old at the time of her death.

2.3.1.2. John Riddell (1877-unknown)

John was born on 26 April 1877 in the village of Kirkton, East Kilbride to John and Helen (Bain) Riddell.  He was their third child, but only his sister, Margaret, was still living at the time of his birth. In 1881 the family lived in the village of East Kilbride and four years later moved to Cambuslang Parish.

When the 1891 census was enumerated the family lived in Vicarfield Terrace in the village of Cambuslang. At the age of 13, John was already working in the coal mines. His father died in 1897 and by 1901 John, his mother, and brother, Robert, were living in the village of Bishopbriggs, in Cadder Parish. Also living with them was a 5 year-old granddaughter of John's mother, named Ellen. John and Robert were listed as being single. My assumption is Ellen was the illegitimate child of John's older sister Margaret, but I can find no registration record for the child's birth.

On 6 October 1904, John Riddell and his friend, Thomas Sorbie, boarded the Anchor Line's S/S Furnessia. They traveled in the steerage section and landed in New York on 18 October. Both John and Thomas were miners. John lived in Glenboig before leaving Scotland and Thomas had lived in Dalserf.  Thomas Sorbie's parents were John and Margaret (Hamilton) Sorbie. Interestingly, John Riddell's grand uncle, Thomas Muir's first wife was a Sorbie, Janet Sorbie (1844-1870). Perhaps Thomas Sorbie was a cousin of John's.

When they arrived in New York, they told U.S. immigration officials their destination was Imperial, Pennsylvania. Imperial was in Allegheny County about 17 miles west of Pittsburgh. Underground was the northern tip of the Pittsburgh coal seam, the thickest and most extensive bed of coal in the Appalachian Basin.

During first decade of the 1900s, when John Riddell and Thomas Sorbie arrived in Imperial, mining companies were sinking new mines at a rapid pace. The growth of mining was so massive and so intertwined with coke production for the iron and steel industry that the era was called the "Golden Age of King Coal, Queen Coke, and Princess Steel." By 1910, however, the golden age was fading, new coke production technology used a lower quality of coal than that of the Pittsburgh seam, which greatly reduced demand.

Regardless of the reasons why John Riddell left Imperial, he was not there when the 1910 U.S. federal census was enumerated and has not been found in any U.S. documentation after his arrival.

David Riddell was born on 20 June 1878 in East Kilbride parish to John and Helen (Bain) Riddell. He died in the evening hours of 21 October 1878 in Kirkton village of tabes mesenterica, which was tuberculosis of the lymph glands inside the abdomen. An illness of children caused by drinking milk from cows infected with tuberculosis. He was 4 months old at the time of his death and had been sick for two months.

After his father's death in 1897, Robert, his brother, John, and his mother lived in the village of Bishopbriggs in Cadder Parish, Lanarkshire. Robert worked as an engine man. No definitive record of his marriage, death or possible immigration to another country has been located.

2.3.1.6 David Riddell (1881-1881)

David Riddell was born on 27 August 1881 in Kirkton village to John and Helen (Bain) Riddell. He died on 29 November 1881 of bronchitis from which he had suffered for three days.  He was three months old at the time of his death.

2.3.1. Helen Bain (1849-unknown)

Helen Bain was born on 6 August 1849 in the village of Doune, Kilmadock Parish, Perth, Scotland, to David and Margaret (McLean) Bain. David was a journeyman mason. In 1851 Helen was the youngest of three children. In 1861, Helen and her brother James were boarders in the home of Daniel and Janet Ferguson, who lived in the village of Doune. Daniel Ferguson was an umbrella maker.

I have been unable to find anyone in the Bain family in 1861 Scotland census. Helen Bain somehow made her way about 40 miles south to East Kilbride where she likely met John Riddell. They were married on 27 November 1874 in the village of Kirkton in East Kilbride parish. Helen had six children between 1875 and 1881. Only three lived past infancy.

Before 1885 the family moved to Cambulang parish and in 1891 were living at Vicarfield Terrace in the village of Cambuslang.  Helen's husband, John Riddell was a laborer in a steel works.  He died six years later in 1897 of tuberculosis.

In 1901 Helen (Bain) Riddell was living in the village of Bishopbriggs in Cadder parish, Lanarkshire. She and her two sons, John and Robert lived in a house with two rooms with one or more windows. Living with them was Helen's 5-year-old granddaughter, Ellen. The census form indicated Ellen had been born in Springburn parish, but no record of her birth or who her parents are has been found.  John and Robert were working as coal miners at the time the census was enumerated.

No other trace of Helen, sometimes known as Ellen (Bain) Riddell has been located in the available documents.

2.3.1. John Riddell (1853-1897)

John Riddell was born on 30 August 1853 in village of Maxwelton, East Kilbride Parish. He was the oldest child of John and Martha (Muir) Riddell.  By 1863 the family had moved to the village of East Kilbride in the same parish and were living on Main Street. When the 1871 census was enumerated John was 17 years old and working as a farm servant.

He married Helen Bain in the village of Kirkton in East Kilbride Parish on 27 November 1874. One of the witnesses to their marriage was John's first cousin, George Cassels. John worked as a laborer and Helen was a servant at the time of their marriage. Helen was sometimes called Ellen on various documents.

They had their first child, Margaret, two months after their marriage in January 1875. A baby girl was born premature on 14 May 1876 and died the same day. She was never named. A son named John was born in 1877. Another son, David, followed in 1878 but died in October of the same year at 4 months of age. A third son, Robert, came next in 1879. Their last child, another son they named David, after Helen's father, was born in 1881. He lived only three months.

The decennial census was taken the same year. John, Helen, and their three children, who were still alive, lived in the village of East Kilbride and John worked as an agricultural laborer. By 1885, the family had moved to 12 Silverbanks Row in Cambuslang Parish.

In 1891 the family lived at Vicarfield Terrace in the village of Cambuslang and John was a laborer at a steel works. He died on 20 August 1897 at the age of 43 of phthisis pulmonalis, or tuberculosis. He was a brick layer at the time. The family was living in the Camlachie district of Glasgow at the time of John's death. He had been working as a laborer at a brick works.

Limestone or Cement Mining

In Scotland limestone has been quarried and mined since at least Roman times. Mixing shale with the correct amount of lime forms cement. John Riddell's occupation when various census were taken every ten years was frequently "cement miner." This likely meant he mined limestone that was destined to be made into cement.

Limestone mining was at its peak when coal was king in Lanarkshire. Ground limestone, or marl, was used in the mines to cover up fine coal dust, which help prevent coal dust explosions.

Rev. Henry Moncrief wrote about the geology of East Kilbride Parish in 1840, "Limestone rocks abound in this parish...occur chiefly in plies or beds from 3 to 7 to 10 feet in thickness...There are lime works at Braehead, Linnekilns, Thornton, Thornton Hall, and elsewhere...Roman cement is found in various places and is worked to a considerable extent."

2.3. John Riddell (1826-1888)

John Riddell was born on 4 April 1826 to John and Margaret (Wrightman) Riddell in the village of Maxwelton, East Kilbride. He was baptized on 23 April. John's father was a cotton hand loom weaver. When the 1851 census was taken on the night of 30 March, John Riddell was 25 years old; lived with his paternal grandparents, John and Janet Riddell; and worked as an iron stone miner.

He married Martha Muir on 7 August in 1852. Their marriage was recorded in the parish church. That church was built in 1774 and still stands today. By the time the 1861 census was enumerated the family had moved into town of East Kilbride and lived on Main Street. They had three children. John Riddell's occupation was listed as cement miner. East Kilbride was known for its “Roman cement” and an 1816 map of the parish showed 15 limekilns or quarries in the area. The watermill in the village was also used for crushing limestone, and limestone mines undermine the eastern end of the present day town center.

Much was the same ten years later. The family was still living on Main Street and John was still mining cement. Their youngest child, Margaret was born four months after the 1871 census was taken on 5 August.

There was some sadness for John during the next decade. His wife Martha Muir died on 6 June 1876 and their youngest daughter on 7 February 1879 of whooping cough and purpura. Purpura are hemorrhages under the skin that cause a purplish discoloration. These hemorrhages may frequently be caused by violent coughing. Margaret was 7 years old when she died.

When the census was enumerated in 1881, John still mined cement and still lived in East Kilbride. John died on 26 January 1888 at his home in the village of Kirkton. He died of chronic bronchitis, which was common among stone miners, and was 61 years old.

2.3. Martha Muir (1830-1876)

Martha Muir was Robert and Henrietta (Brown) Muir's third child. She was born on 2 September 1830 in Glassford Parish, Lanarkshire. In 1841, when the census was enumerated the family had moved to East Kilbride Parish. Ten years later, Robert and Henrietta's children were enumerated in the 1851 census and lived in the village of Kirkton, East Kilbride. Martha's older sister, Elizabeth, was listed as head of the household. The three oldest daughters -- Elizabeth, Martha, and Jean -- worked as farm servants.

Martha married John Riddell the next year on 7 August in East Kilbride.

When the 1861 census was taken, the family was living on Main Street in East Kilbride; John worked as a cement miner; and they had three children -- John, Henrietta, and Oswald. Ten years later the family was still living on Main Street. Two of their children, Henrietta and Oswald, had left home, but four more children had been born: Robert, Elizabeth (born nine days before Aunt Elizabeth, died), Francis, and Thomas.

Their youngest child, Margaret Riddell was born in 1871 after the census was taken.

Martha Muir died five years later on 6 June 1876 in the village of Kirkton of phthisis pulmonalis, or tuberculosis. She was 45 years old. Her husband never remarried and died 12 years later.

The Price of Coal

Deep down in the bowels of this beautiful earth,
Oh his dark throne sits King Coal
He calls for his revenue every day,
Caring neither for body nor soul.
When to the grim monarch the miner descends,
He remembers the saying devine;
Not one of knows what a day may bring forth,
So true of the lads in the mine.

Deep down in the bowels of this beautiful earth,
Death lurks unseen, unheard;
Till with a roar, or a blinding flash,
On the lives of the men he has fared
'Tis then that faith and valor combine,
In deeds that are known but to God and themselves --
So true of the lads in the mine.

Deep down in the bowels of this beautiful earth
We sat, my mate and I,
To plan our work; yet little we thought
In a moment one would die.
O God, 'twas a cry I shall never forget
As my mate paid his price at the shrine;
A price that is sought by the monarch of coal
From the lads who toil in the mine.

Deep down in the bowels of this beautiful earth,
Down in that dark domain;
Men grovel and toil for the treasure it holds
Their bodies oft aching with pain.
As you sit by your fireside in comfort and warmth
And watch the firelight twine;
Give a thought to the price that's paid for in lives
Of our lads who work in the mine.

Volume II Introduction

The descendants of Robert and Henrietta (Brown) Muir's second daughter, Martha Muir, and her husband, John Riddell, encompass 253 known ancestors across five generations. They scattered throughout lowland Scotland, leading lives in increasingly industrialized times. Some emigrated, settling in Canada, New Zealand and the United States. Several became property owners in their native Scotland or adopted countries. By in large Martha (Muir) Riddell's descendants worked with their hands either underground, out of doors, or in large factories and shipyards. They experienced great sadness and I am sure great joy.

They buried children before their time; committed suicide when life seemed unbearable; died of barbiturate poisoning (a drug overdose in 1950?); and AIDS before the dreadful disease pricked the conscious of Western cultures. They worked in hazardous occupations sometimes paying with their lives. But many were willing to take risks and face the vast unknown in search of "better conditions." They married, stayed married through thick and thin and raised large families. This is their tale.
