Sarah Chalmers was born on 12 November 1890 at 60 McNeil Street in Hutchestown, Lanarkshire, to John and Jessie (Hopkinson) Chalmers. Her father was an iron borer. The family was still at the same address when the 1891 census was taken and by 1901 had moved to 64 McNeil Street. In 1911 the family lived at the same address and Sarah worked as a hand reeler in a carpet factory. Her older sister worked as a clerk at the same factory.
Sarah married William Forsyth on 4 April 1913 at William's parents' home on 230 Holm Street in Glasgow according to the forms of the United Free Church. Sarah was 22 years old, lived with her parents at the McNeil Street address and was a machinist in a carpet factory. The couple had at least two sons.
Sarah died on 23 December 1961 at an infirmary in Glasgow of hypernephroma and secondary neoplasm, which is renal cancer and tumors. She was 71 years old and had lived with her husband at 56 Boyd Street in Glasgow before her death.
