2.12.3.1.7.1. Linda Joyce Johnson (1948-2008)

Linda Joyce Johnson was born on 13 June 1948. On 6 July 1964 at the age of 16 she married Carlton Ray Benge. They had two sons in 1971 and 1973. The couple divorced on 11 August 1976 in Palo Pinto County, Texas.

She then married Charles W. Railsback on 22 December 1976 in Gray County, Texas, and her third husband was J. L. Jones, who she married in 21 March 1985 in Cherokee County, Texas. I do not believe she had children from these marriages, but am not completely sure.

Two years later she married 19-year-old Wester Joseph Billiot, Jr. on 22 August 1987 in Cherokee County. They had two children and lived in several cities in Texas before moving to Jackson, Mississippi.

Linda (Johnson) Billiot died on 14 September 2006 in Jacksonville, Texas, according to the Tyler Texas Library obituary index. Curiously her Social Security Death Index records listed her date of death as 13 December 2006.

2.12.3.1.7. Shirley Mae Muir (1944-2000)

Shirley Mae Muir was born on 20 October 1944 in Louisiana to Henry "Jack" and Armitar Ormmueth (Alleman) Muir. She was their sixth, and youngest, child.

I know very little about her life other than the information that was included in her obituary. She married Rudolfo R. Martinez on 6 May 1985 in Cherokee County, Texas. Next, she married Julio Baltierra in 1989 and they moved from Colorado to Amarillo, Texas in 1990.

She had four children: Kim Sanchez, Israel Billiot, Wes Billiot, and Johnny Rocha.

She was killed in a three-car collision near Valle de Oro, Texas on 8 December 2000. An article about the accident appeared in the Amarillo Globe News:

Valle de Oro woman killed in collision

A Valle de Oro woman was instantly killed in a three-car collision near that community Friday morning when a driver failed to stop in a construction zone and struck the woman's pick-up truck, according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Wayne Beighle.

The Potter County Sheriff's Department and Potter County Fire and Rescue crews responded to a 911 call at 10:49 a.m. 20 miles north of Amarillo on Farm-to-Market Road 1061 just south of Sarges Country Store in a construction zone.

When they arrived, they found a Ford Ranger crunched behind the trailer of a tractor-trailer parked on the northbound lane of the road and a Ford van on its side blocking the southbound lane, Beighle said.

Shirley Baltierra, 56, who was driving the Ford Ranger, was pinned inside her pickup while truck driver Thomas Olivarez of Amarillo was walking around outside his vehicle. The driver of the van, Christopher Lee Vasquez, 22, of Amarillo was injured and still inside his van.

Rescue crews called Lifestar to the scene to take Vasquez to Northwest Texas Hospital (NWTH). Late Friday he was listed in stable condition, according to a hospital supervisor. Oliver was transported by ambulance to NWTH with minor injuries, Beighle said.

Beighle said Vasquez was distracted and didn't see the vehicles in front of him were stopped and struck the back of the Ranger slamming it into the tractor-trailer.

Crews were on scene for 2-1/2 hours trying to pry Baltierra's body from the destroyed pickup, Beagle said. The road was closed at least three hours, he said.

The collision remained under investigation by DPS troops, Beighle said.

2.12.3.1.5.2. Edna Conrad (1954- )

Edna Conrad was born on 1 March 1954 to Isaac Junior and Barbara Jean (Muir) Conrad. She was their oldest child. Her nickname is "Doll."

Doll married Maurice Doyle "Cajun" Melerine, son of Anthony and Leonicia (Campo) Melerine. Cajun and Doll had three children.

Public records indicated they lived in Braxton County, West Virginia, in 1993. I believed they lived in Saint Bernard, Louisiana, before moving to West Virginia.

Cajun Melerine died on 6 June 2015 in Burnsville, West Virginia.

Those left to honor her memory are sons, Steven L. Pulliam of Ripley, WV; Carl Lee Pulliam of Burnsville, WV; and Dakota B. Debbie cared for her family dearly, and was a wonderful wife and mother throughout her life. She was the mother of two biological children, along with six legally adopted more, which she loved very much. In addition to her family, she had a deep compassion for animals. She previously worked as a dog groomer, and had worked in a pet shop. She took pleasure in hobbies such as making ceramics, fishing, boating, camping and enjoyed working in the yard and was always happy to weed eat. Debbie was a cheerful, compassionate person who will be deeply missed by her family.

A private celebration of life ceremony will be held at a later date. Words of comfort and memories may be expressed to the family at stockert-paletti.com.

The Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home of Flatwoods, WV is honored to be handling the arrangements for Debbie J. Pulliam.

2.12.3.1.5. Isaac Junior Conrad (1927-2002)

Isaac Junior Conrad was born on 20 October 1927 to Anna Lea Conrad in Napier, West Virginia. Anna was not married at the time of his birth and his father is not known. He was known as June most of his life. He lived with his mother and maternal grandparents in Salt Lick, West Virginia. His grandfather was a farmer. In 1930 his grandfather owned his own farm but in 1940 he was a farm laborer on a farm on Bennings Run Road in Salt Lick. He had been out of work for 18 weeks in 1939 and made $150. He was not working at the time the 1940 census was enumerated. I imagine the Depression was hard on the family.

On 20 September 1949 Isaac was drafted into the U.S. Army; he was discharged on 18 December 1952 and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He married Barbara Jean Muir on 15 January 1953 in Sutton, West Virginia. They were both living in Orlando, West Virginia, and neither had been married previously. They had three known daughters together before they divorced. Isaac apparently never remarried.

He died on 11 November 2002 at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia, His last Social Security benefit check was mailed to an address in Stouts Mill, West Virginia, an unincorporated place in Gilmer County. He was interred at the Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens in Heaters, West Virginia.

Hurricane Camille

Hurricane Camille made landfall in Waveland, Mississippi as a Category 5 (on the Saffir-Simpson Scale) storm on 17 August 1969.  In all nearly 300 people were killed in the U.S., over 8,900 were injured nearly 6,000 homes were destroyed, and approximately 14,000 severely damaged. Estimated total damage costs were $9.13 billion in today's dollars, making it the second most expensive hurricane in history up to that point.

Track of Hurricane Camille; map courtesy of Wikipedia

Luckily, for the residents of Louisiana, they were on the western side of the hurricane. Yet, the death and destruction were still intense. Winds gusted up to 125 miles per hour in Slidell, Louisiana, where many members of the extended Muir family lived. Louisiana experienced storm surges of 10 to 16 feet of water, which can be catastrophic for low-lying coastal areas.

It was the last killer hurricane to make landfall with only last-minute warnings. While the use of satellites was in its infancy at the time of Camille, the storm intensified in the Gulf of Mexico and defied predictions that it would hit the Florida panhandle. The science and technology used to predict hurricanes has rapidly advanced since Camille, which makes the devastation in the wake of Katrina all the more inexplicable.

2.12.3.1.5. Barbara Jean Muir (1935-1999)

Barbara Jean Muir was born on 25 July 1935 in Rayne, Louisiana, to Henry "Jack" and Armitar Ormmueth (Alleman) Muir. She was their fourth child. She and her family were still living in Rayne when the 1940 census was enumerated and her father worked as a truck driver.

On 28 August 1951 Barbara Jean had a son she named Lester Joseph "Joe" Barbazan. I do not believe she married his father her marital status two years later was listed as single, meaning she wasn't divorced or a widow.

On 15 January 1953, at the age of 17, Barbara Jean married Isaac Junior Conrad in Sutton, West Virginia. Neither had been married before. Both Barbara Jean and Isaac were living in Orlando, West Virginia, at the time of their marriage. The couple had three daughters.

She next married Ray Emile Nehlig, Sr., on 15 June 1963 in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. They had two children, Wanda Sue and Raymond Emile Nehlig, Sr., before divorcing on 15 April 1970 in the same parish. The dates for her marriage and divorce were provided by her daughter.

At some time before her death she married Dallas Bourque, but I know nothing about him. Barbara Jean died on 17 October 1999 of cancer at her home in New Orleans. She was 64 years old at the time of her death.

Michael McCommons, Jr: Rayne man dies in Monday crash

As published in the Rayne-Acadian on 30 September 2009:

One person was killed in a Monday afternoon crash when the vehicle he was driving ran off Interstate 10 west of Jennings and flipped several times.

Killed was Michael McCommons, Jr., 27, of Rayne.

McCommons reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle he was driving ran off the roadway and flipped several times, ejecting McCommons.

McCommons was transported to Lafayette General Hospital and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to investigators from Troop D, on September 28 at around 5:15 p.m., the 2003 Ford pick-up truck, driven by McCommons from Rayne was traveling east on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Davis Parish. While traveling east on Interstate 10, the left rear tire of the 2003 Ford pick-up blew out, causing the truck to lose control. The pick-up truck ran off the roadway and flipped several times, ejecting McCommons. A passenger in the pick-up truck, Amy Kibodeaux, 30, from Scott, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

Toxicology tests are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation.

2.12.3.1.4. Loretta Mae Jacobs (1945-2001)

Loretta Mae Jacobs was born on 31 October 1945 in Columbus, Ohio, likely to Edward Ransom and Hazel Loretta (Chapman) Jacobs. Her father was an "inmate" in various institutions for the feeble-minded in Ohio as enumerated in the 1920 and 1930 census. Whether Edward was mentally ill or merely came from a poor family with no other way to care for him except institutionalization, I have no idea. He married Hazel sometime after 1940.

Loretta Mae (Jacobs) married Alexander "Sandy" A. Muir sometime in the 1960s; they had four children.  Her daughter's family tree on Ancestry.com indicates Sandy and Loretta divorced after having four children and that Loretta never remarried. A grandson emailed me and said they never divorced.

Loretta  Mae died on 18 May 2001. Her last social security benefit check was mailed to an address in Port Barre, Louisiana, but I do not know her exact place of death.

A notice of her death was published in the Opelousas Daily World on May 20, 2001:

2.12.3.1.4. Alexander A. Muir (1934-1998)

Alexander "Sandy" A. Muir was born on 19 August 1934 in Lake Arthur, Louisiana, to Henry "Jack" and Armitar Ormmueth (Alleman) Muir. He was their third son. A year after his birth the family lived in Los Angeles, California, but by 1940 they were back in Louisiana, living in Rayne. His father worked as a truck driver.

Sandy was drafted into the U.S. Army on 19 August 1951 and discharged on 22 August 1954. His period of military service overlapped with the Korean Conflict. His grandson believes he served with the 19th Cavalry during World War II, but I am not sure how this is possible as he would have 11 years old at the end of that war.

Sometime after he was discharged, he married Loretta Mae Jacobs and they had four children.

His daughter's family tree on Ancestry.com indicates Sandy and Loretta divorced after having four children and that Sandy remarried and had a son. I have no found no source documentation to verify this. A grandson of Sandy and Loretta contacted me and said they never divorced.

Sandy Muir died on 21 August 1998. His last Social Security benefit check was mailed to an address in Port Barre, Louisiana, but I do not know his exact place of death.

Beverly Joan Hibbitts Obituary

There will be a private service held for Beverly Spear. Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Spear, 72, died October 31, 2001, at King's Daughters Medical Center. She was born in Kentucky on June 17, 1939 to Herbert Hibbitts and Gladis Freedman Hibbitts.

She was a homemaker and of the Catholic faith.

Preceding her in death were her parents; son, Kenny Spear; sisters, Jewel Taylor, Juanita Lazzara, Joy Buttagh, and Cheastineal Hibbitts; and brother, Donnie Hibbitts.

Survivors are her sons, Daniel Spear, Johnathan Spear, James Muir, Paul Muir, and Anya Wells; daughters, Kathy Skinner and husband, James, Judy Pichon and husband, Larry, Cheryl Courtney and Danny Hughes and Monique Meilleur and Kenny Rogers; sister, Barbra Kealley; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

To express your thoughts to the family, you may want to visit riverwoodfamily.com and click on her name to leave a comment.

NOTE: There are several points of confusion in this obituary. Beverly's mother's maiden name is not Freedman. Her mother was not married to Josephus Freeman at the time of her birth. He later became her step-father. Anya Wells is not a daughter; she is the mother of Paul Muir's children. Monique Meilleur is also not a daughter; she is the ex-girlfriend of James Muir and the mother of his children. Kenny Rogers is also not a son according to two of her children.

In 1935 Henry lived with his parents in Los Angeles, California, and in 1940, the family lived in Rayne, Louisiana. His father was a truck driver.

2.12.3.1.1.3. Sandra Rae Anderson (1939- )

Sandra Rae Anderson was born on 27 December 1939 in West Union, West Virginia to Raymond and Eleanor Mae (Powell) Anderson. Her parents had married earlier that year but soon after Sandra's birth, her father was out of the picture and her parents divorced. Her mother married Lawrence Russell Hoskinson in 1944 and Sandra used his surname as her maiden name. I do not know if he formally adopted her.

Sandra Rae Hoskinson married Elmer Dixon Tubbs on 27 March 1963 in Skamania County, Washington. They had a daughter about 1964. Sandra Rae divorced Elmer Tubbs on 24 November 1965 in Summit County, Ohio.

On 20 December 1965 Sandra Rae and Van Jeffrey Blankenship applied for a marriage license in Summit County, Ohio. She indicated she had been married twice previously so there was another marriage prior to Elmer Tubbs. She was six years older than Van, lived at the same address -- 148 Willard Street in Akron, Ohio -- and worked as a nurses aid. They did not marry, however, until 8 Jul 1971 in Winchester, Virginia. At the time of their marriage both Sandra Rae and Van were living at 1342 Getz Street in Akron, Ohio.

Sandra and Van divorced two and a half years later. The divorce was finalized on 11 January 1974 in Summit County. Van Jeffrey was granted the divorce decree after proving his wife was grossly neglectful in her duties. According to the divorce decree, they had three children together, but I do not know anything about them.

I lose track of Sandra Rae (Anderson) Tubbs Blankenship after the divorce. My assumption is that she remarried for the fourth time.
