Neil Johnston was born on 16 March 1902 at 49 Nelson Street in Glasgow to Allan and Margaret Beith (Atkinson) Johnston. He was their youngest child and his father was a tinsmith, a person who makes or repairs tinware or items of other light metals.
In 1911 Neil lived with his family at the Nelson Street address and attended school.
On 29 November 1929 Neil married Robina Forsyth at the MacLeod Parish Church. He was 27 years old, a journeyman plumber and lived with his widowed father at 49 Nelson Street. He and Robina had at least one known daughter.
Neil died on 30 January 1962 at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow of carcinoma of the bladder. The was 59 years old, worked as a journeyman plumber's welder and lived at One Millburn Street with his wife before his death.
