2.3.6.4.2. Frank Riddell Frame (1930- )

Frank Riddell Frame was born on 15 February 1930 at his parents' home on 36 Scott Street in Hamilton to William Murray Graham and Jessie Kerr (Riddell) Frame. His father was a school teacher. Frank was named for his maternal grandfather Francis Riddell, which could mean he was the couple's second son if they followed the traditional Scottish naming conventions.

He married June Marie Douglas in 1917 in Glasgow. She was born in 1943 in the Bridgeton district of Glasgow. Nothing more is known about the couple after their marriage.

Children of William Murray Graham and Jessie Kerr (Riddell) Frame

2.3.6.4.1. John Frame (unknown- )

All that is known about John Frame is that he was the informant listed on the registration of his father's death in 1959. My assumption is he was born after their marriage but before their second known son, who was born in 1930. There were six children born in Hamilton during that time period named John Frame. The only way to know for sure is to wait until the digital images are available or purchase the birth registrations for each possible child named John Frame.

2.3.6.4.2. Frank Riddell Frame (1930- )

The lives of Frank Riddell Frame and his wife, June Marie Douglas, will be covered in a future post.

2.3.5.8.1. Robert Forsyth McInally (1924-2010)

Robert Forsyth McInally was born in 1924 in the Gorbals district of Glasgow to Thomas and Annie (Forsyth) McInally. He was their only known child. He married Catherine McKay Liddell in 1954 in Glasgow.

In 1987 Robert was the informant listed on his mother's death registration and lived at 7 Johnstone Road in Gartcosh, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He died in 2010 in Dunblane, Perth, Scotland. His wife may still be living. It is not known if the couple had children.

2.3.5.8. Thomas McInally (1903-1971)

Thomas McInally was born on 24 January 1903 at 92 Burnside Street in the Milton district of Glasgow. He parents were James and Marion (Murray) McInally and his father was a cab driver. When the 1911 census was enumerated, Thomas was an "inmate" at the Ruchill Fever Hospital in the Possilpark district of Glasgow.

On 27 April 1923 he married Annie Forsyth at her home on 47 Clarence Street according to the forms of the United Free Church of Scotland. He was 20 years old, also lived on 47 Clarence Street, and worker as a carter like Annie's father. He was almost 4 years younger than Annie. They had one known son.

Thomas McInally died on 16 June 1971 at the Hawkhead Hospital in Paisley of respiratory infection, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary infiltration. He was 68 years old, lived at 288 Kintyre Avenue in Linwood, Renfrewshire, and was a retired engineer's store man.

2.3.5.8. Annie Forsyth (1899-1987)

Annie Forsyth was born on 6 June 1899 at 35 Sunnybank Street in the Bridgeton district of Glasgow. She was the youngest known child of Robert and Elizabeth (Riddell) Forsyth. Her father was a carter.  Strangely, when the 1901 census was enumerated Annie was not living with her family. No Ann, Anna, Anne, or Annie Forsyth listed in the 1901 census was the Annie Forsyth for which we were searching.

In 1911 she lived with her family at 230 Holm Street in Glasgow. She married Thomas McInally on 27 April 1923 at her parents home on 47 Clarence Street according to the forms of the United Free Church of Scotland. She was 22 years old, lived with her parents and worked as a shirt machinist, or someone who operated a machine in a shirt factory. She and Thomas had one known son.

Annie (Forsyth) McInally died on 24 August 1987 at Johnstone Hospital, which was a nursing home, of acute myocardial infarction and cerebra-vascular disease. She was 88 years old.

2.3.5.7. Francis McDade (1895-before 1982)

Francis McDade was born on 23 May 1895 at 55 Unity Street in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, to Robert and Annie Buchanan. His father was a cabinet maker. Francis was baptized on 20 June of the same year. Between 1879 and 1895, the family bounced back and forth between Belfast and Glasgow. However, by 1901 Annie McDade was a widow and had moved her family to Glasgow. They lived on 48 South Coburg Street in the Govan district. Francis attended school. In 1911 they lived on 115 Thistle Street in the Hutchesontown district. Francis worked as a French polisher, who was someone who brought a fine finish to wooden furniture using oils.

Francis McDade married Ellen Forsyth in 1949 in the Hillhead area of Glasgow. He was 54 years old and had not previously been married. He lived at 61 Oran Street in Glasgow and still worked as a French polisher. He signed the marriage registrations as Francis McDade Ballantine and listed his parents names as Robert McDade (deceased) and Annie Ballantine (previously McDade), maiden name Buchanan (deceased). This would lead one to believe Francis' mother had remarried, but I do not believe that to be the case. She died in 1933 and her name was recorded as Annie McDade, widow of Robert McDade, cabinet maker.

Ellen's death registration indicated she was a widow. She died in 1982 so Francis likely died before then; however, I have been unable to find a death registration.

Joseph and Ellen (Forsyth) Johnston Divorce

I have found divorce unusual in Scotland even after World War II and was a bit surprised when I learned Joseph Johnston died after Ellen had married Francis McDade Ballantine until I discovered this record after looking more closely at their marriage registration.

2.3.5.7. Joseph Johnston (1896-1956)

Joseph Johnston was born on 26 August 1896 in Orchardhead, Blantyre, Scotland, to John and Margaret (Dickie) Johnston. Joseph's father was a coal miner. In 1901 the family remained in Blantyre parish as they did in 1911 when Joseph was 15 years old. At that time he worked as a pit head worker and lived with his parents at 54 Watson Street.

On 31 October 1919 he married Ellen Forsyth, who was known as Helen, at her parents' home on 47 Clarence Street in Glasgow according to the forms of the United Free Church of Scotland. Joseph was 23 years old, worked as a coal miner and lived at 191 Main Street in Blantyre. They had at least one son.

In 1925 Joseph and Ellen lived at Joseph's home on 191 Main Street for which he paid 12 pounds, 15 shillings in annual rent and he worked as a miner.

Ellen initiated a divorce action against Joseph that was final on 17 June 1949. She married again later that same year. At the time of their divorce Joseph lived at 100 Cooper Street in the Towhead area of Glasgow.

On 24 June 1956 Joseph Johnston died of a skull fracture and multiple bodily injuries at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow. He was 59 years old and had previously worked as a laborer in a cleansing department. Before his death his usual residence was Gartloch Hospital in Glasgow. Gartloch was a National Health Service mental hospital.

I have some questions about Joseph. How did he come to be in Gartloch? Was it also why Ellen divorced him? How did he sustain the terrible injuries from which he died?

2.3.5.7. Ellen Forsyth (1896-1982)

Ellen Forsyth was born at 19 London Road in the Camlachie district of Glasgow to Robert and Elizabeth (Riddell) Forsyth. Her father was a carter. In 1901 the family lived on 14 Margaret Street and by 1911 they lived at 230 Holm Street. Ellen was 15 years old and worked as a message girl for a picture frame maker. Two of her sisters also worked at the picture frame factory. Ellen appeared as Helen occasionally on records.

On 31 October 1919 Ellen married Joseph Johnston at home according to the forms of the United Free Church. She was 22 years old, lived at 47 Clarence Street, and worked as a machinist in a shirt factory. She and Joseph had at least one child, John Forsyth Johnston.

Ellen brought a divorce action against Joseph, which was finalized on 17 Jun 1949. She lived on 5 Mingarry Street, Glasgow, at the time. She married Francis McDade Ballantine on 27 September 1949 in the office of the Registrar for the district of Hillhead in Glasgow. She was 53 years old and lived at 5 Mingarry Street in Glasgow.

She died on 3 July 1982 at Stobhill Hospital of a cerebro-vascular accident, alimentary hemorrhage, and congestive cardiac failure. She was 85 years old at the time of her death and lived on 64 Hathaway Lane in Glasgow. Her son was the informant listed on her death registration.

2.3.5.5.1. William Gemmell (unknown- )

William Gemmell was the only known son of John Duffy and Elizabeth (Forsyth) Riddell. I have been unable to find a birth, marriage or possible death registration for William.  All I know is that he was the informant listed on both his parents' death registrations and at the time of his father's death in 1954 lived at 5 Mitchell Street in Rutherglen, Glasgow.

2.3.5.5. John Duffy Gemmell (1884-1954)

John Duffy Gemmell was born on 2 August 1884 at 25 Montgomery Street in the Bridgeton district of Glasgow to William and Margaret (Duffy) Gemmell. His father was a laborer in a tube works, which was a manufacturing plant that made iron tubes. In 1891 the family lived on 130 Bernard Street in Glasgow.

On 24 May 1907 John and a cousin named William Duffy boarded the Allan and State Line's S/S Sarmatian in Glasgow and sailed for the United States. At the time of his journey he was 22 years old and worked as a threader, a person who made thread. They arrived in Boston on 10 June and told immigration officials they were headed to their friend, Robert Coverley, who lived on 208 Randolph Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Pawtucket had been a manufacturing center of cotton textiles since the Industrial Revolution began.

When the 1910 U.S. federal census was enumerated, John was living at a large boarding house on 61 Waterman Avenue in North Providence, Rhode Island, run by Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Wallworth. He was a weaver at a woolen mill.

For some reason, John returned to Scotland in 1911. He sailed from New York City aboard the Anchor Line's S/S Columbia and arrived in Glasgow on 29 January 1911.

He married Elizabeth Forsyth on 27 October 1916 at 47 Clarence Street in Glasgow according to the forms of the Congregational Union Church. He was 32 years old, worked as a picture frame mount cutter and lived at 120 Linden Road in the Gorbals district of Glasgow. Perhaps he met Elizabeth at the picture frame factory? They had at least one son, William Gemmell.

John Duffy Gemmell died on 31 May 1954 at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow of coronary thrombosis, small bowel obstruction, and multiple cerebral hemorrhages. He was 69 years old, a retired engine fitter's helper and had lived with his wife at 11 Hamilton Street in Rutherglen.

2.3.5.5. Elizabeth Forsyth (1892-1968)

Elizabeth Forsyth was on 16 January 1892 at her parents' home on 165 Brook Street in Glasgow. Her parents were Robert and Elizabeth (Riddell) Forsyth and her father was a carter. By 1901 the family lived on 14 Margaret Street. In 1911 Elizabeth lived with her family at 230 Holm Street and worked as a picture frame finisher. Two of her sisters also worked at the picture frame factory.

On 27 October 1916 she married John Duffy Gemmell at 47 Clarence Street in Glasgow according to forms of the Congregational Union Church. She was 24 years old, lived at 47 Clarence Street, and still worked as a picture frame finisher. The couple had at least one son, William Gemmell, who was the informant listed on both his parents' death registrations.

Elizabeth (Forsyth) Gemmell lost her husband in 1954. She died on 18 January 1968 at 90 Westmoreland Street, Rutherglen, Scotland. The address appears to be a private residence. Her usual address at the time of her death was 266 Main Street, Rutherglen, which was about 3 miles from where she died. She was 76 years old and died of congestive cardiac failure and hypertension.

2.3.5.4. William Forsyth (1889-1974)

William Forsyth was born on 11 November 1889 at his parents' home on 165 Brook Street in the Camlachie district of Glasgow. His parents were Robert and Elizabeth (Riddell) Forsyth and his father was a carter. When his father registered his birth later in November 1889, he registered his hame as William John Riddell Forsyth. This was changed on 4 February 1890 in a register of corrected entries to William Forsyth under the authority of Reverend John Jenkins, minister of the Great Hamilton Street Congregational Church in Glasgow.

In 1891 William lived with his family at the home where he was born on Brook Street. Ten years later the family lived on 14 Margaret Street in the St. David district of Glasgow and by 1911 the family lived on 230 Holm Street also in Glasgow. William, like his father, was working as a carter.

On 4 April 1913 he married Sarah Chalmers at his parents home on Holm Street according to the forms of the United Free Church. He was 23 years old and worked as a carter. The couple had at least two sons.

Sarah (Chalmers) Forsyth died in 1961 and William married Josephine Livingston (Anderson) Thorrat, a widow, in 1963 in the Cathcart area of Glasgow.

2.3.5.1. Jane Forsyth (1882-1956)

Jane Forsyth was born 3 December 1882 at 84 Henderson Street in the Kelvin district of Glasgow. Her parents were Robert Forsyth and Elizabeth Riddell, who did not marry until the month after her birth. Jane lived with her family on 165 Brook Street in Glasgow in 1891.

By 1901 the family lived at 14 Margaret Street in the same city and Jane was working as a picture frame finisher.  By 1911 Jane and her family had moved to 230 Holm Street. She still worked as a picture frame finisher. Her younger sisters, Elizabeth and Ellen, also worked with her.

On 20 October 1911 Jane married Thomas Bannatyne Sproull at her home on Holm Street, according to the forms of the United Free Church. I believe Jane met Thomas at work as he was a picture packer at a frame warehouse when the 1911 census was enumerated.

Jane and Thomas had at one known daughter in 1912.

Jane (Forsyth) Sproull died on 28 July 1956 of myeloid leukemia at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow. She was 73 years old at the time of her death and lived with her husband at 61 Ashcroft Drive in Glasgow. Her husband died in 1973.

Henrietta Forsyth was born on 23 April 1894 at 165 Brook Street in the Camlachie district of Glasgow to Robert and Elizabeth (Riddell) Forsyth. She was their sixth child. In 1901 she lived with her family on 14 Margaret Street and in 1911, on 230 Holm Street -- both addresses in Glasgow. In 1911 she was 17 years old and did not work or attend school.

Henrietta Forsyth died on 25 September 1917 at the Govan Poorhouse hospital in the Merryflatts area  of Glasgow of paraplegia and bed sores. She was 23 years old.

I have always been curious if the paraplegia was a long-term condition and this is why she was not working in 1911 or if she was involved in some sort of an accident.
