Elizabeth Rooney was born on 5 February 1892 in Hamilton, Scotland, to John and Elizabeth (Loughran) Rooney. Her father was a coal miner born in Ireland and her mother in Coatbridge, Scotland. The family lived at 27 Dykehead Row in Hamilton in 1901 and at 41 Whitehill Road in 1911.
On 29 December 1911 Elizabeth married Hamilton McCormick Riddell at the Manse in the Burnbank area of Hamilton parish. She was a 19-year-old dairy maid and he was a 22-year-old coal miner. Elizabeth listed her residence at the time of her marriage as 5 Dykehead Row. The couple had two known sons.
Elizabeth died at her home on 17 Parks View in Hamilton on 7 December 1969 of hypostatic pneumonia and cardiac failure. She was 71 years old and had been a widow for nine years.
