2.3.4.1. John Douglas (1867-1930)

John Douglas was born in Millrodgie in the parish of Crieff to Charles and Jane "Jean" Ann (Clark) Douglas. His father worked as a blacksmith. By 1871 the family had moved to Fowlis Wester, a small village nearly four kilometers from Crieff.

In 1881 14-year-old John was working as a sheep herder on Auchinglen Farm. The farm was 116 acres and employed four other people and was managed or owned by Catherine Stewart. Ten years later, John worked for Andrew Davie, the keeper of the Drummond Arms Hotel in Comrie as a stableman. The hotel building dates back to the Jacobite era.

By 1901 John Douglas and Agnes Riddell McCormick were living together in the St. George area of Glasgow as husband and wife and John worked as a railway carter. Carters worked with horses and carts on farms, towns, and cities, hauling lighter loads than would a lorry man. He and Agnes had their first child later that year.

On 1 January 1903 John Douglas and Agnes married at their home on 31 Renfrew Lane in Glasgow according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. John was 17 years older than Agnes, but neither had been married before. The couple had five more children before 1911. When the census was taken that year, the family lived at One Rutherford Lane in the Govan area of Glasgow.

In 1915 John paid 7 pounds, 10 shillings annual rent to Train & McIntyre, Limited for the house at One Rutherford Lane. In 1920 the rent for the same house was 9 pounds, 15 shillings. Between 1920 and 1925 John moved his family to 5 Rutherford Lane and paid 11 pounds, 15 shillings annual rent.

John and Agnes had nine known children and Agnes died in 1929. After his wife's death, he lived with his daughter Catherine. John died a little more than a year later on 29 November 1930 at the Royal Infirmary in Dennistoun of a cerebral hemorrhage. John worked as a carter for most of his working life.
