2.3.4.1. Agnes Riddell McCormick (1884-1929)

Agnes Riddell McCormick was born on 21 February 1884 at 9 Hope Street in Hamilton parish. Her mother, Catherine McCormick, was not married at the time of her birth and did not list the name of Agnes' father when she registered her birth. However, Robbert Riddell and Catherine McCormick married ten months later.

It was very common for an illegitimate child to be given the surname of the father as a middle name. The father's name would only appear on registration record if he was present at the time the birth was registered. Therefore, my assumption is that Agnes Riddell McCormick is the eldest daughter of Robert Riddell and was my second cousin twice removed.

After Robert and Catherine's marriage, Agnes lived with them and the children they had subsequently. In 1891 the growing family lived at 67 Glasgow in Hamilton. By 1901, at the age of 17, Agnes was recorded as the wife of John Douglas in the St. George area of Glasgow. Their oldest son, also named John, was born in December of that same year.

John Douglas and Agnes Riddell McCormick married on 1 January 1903 in the Blythswood area of Glasgow according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. John was a 34 year-old carter and Agnes was 19 years old. They both lived at 31 Renfrew Lane in Glasgow.

When the 1911 census was enumerated the couple lived at One Rutherford Lane in the Govan area of Glasgow, a working-class neighborhood near the shipyards on the Clyde river. During their marriage the couple had nine children from 1901 to 1923. At least four of their children died in infancy.

Agnes died on 15 June 1929 at the age of 45 of pulmonary tuberculosis and cardiac failure at Ruchill Hospital in the Possilpark area of Glasgow. The hospital specialized in the treatment of infectious diseases. At the time of her death she and John lived at 5 Rutherford Lane.
