2.3.4. Catherine McCormick (1861-1915)

Catherine McCormick was born on 31 January 1861 in the North Bogside area of Baldernock parish in Stirling, Scotland. Her parents were Hamilton and Agnes (Black) McCormick and her father was an iron miner. By 1871 the family had moved to Beith, Ayrshire and Catherine's father mined coal.

Catherine had a daughter, who she named Agnes Riddell McCormick, on 21 February 1884 at 9 Hope Street in Hamilton. She registered the birth on 10 March with the parish registrar but did not provide the name of the baby's father. It is assumed, due to the middle name and subsequent events that Agnes' father was Robert Riddell.

Ten months after Agnes was born, Catherine married Robert Riddell on 19 December 1884 at 9 Hope Street in Hamilton, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Robert was a 22-year-old mason's laborer and Catherine was the same age and a dairy maid. The coupled listed 9 Colebrook Street in Cambuslang as their place of residence at the time of their marriage.

The couple had eight children after their marriage. All but the youngest were born in Hamilton parish.

When the 1891 census was enumerated the couple had four children, including Agnes, who was listed as Agnes Riddell, and lived at 67 Glasgow Road in Hamilton. Robert worked as an engine keeper in a quarry.

Ten years later the family had moved to 5 Craig Rows in the Anchintibber area of Blantyre parish and had six children living at home. In 1911, when the census was taken, Catherine was visiting her daughter Agnes, who had married John Douglas, and lived at One Rutherford Lane in Glasgow.

Catherine died on 9 July 1915 at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow of chronic nephritis, which is an inflammation of the kidneys. She was 54 years old at the time of her death. She and her husband, Robert, lived in Dykehead by Hamilton, before Catherine was admitted to the infirmary.

Catherine (McCormick) Riddell was interred in Bent Cemetery in Hamilton on 12 July 1915.
