Altecia Opal Dillinger was born on 4 April 1949. According to Grandma Jennings' genealogy notebook, she married Robert Samuel Jenks on 26 October 1968. They had a daughter the following year.
I do not know if Altecia and Robert divorced or if they were still married at the time of his death in 1979.
On 29 May 1984 Altecia married Louis Willard Mercier, son of Joseph Mercier and Nedra Loiselle, in Washburn County, Wisconsin. Louis was nearly 20 years her senior and had been married at least four times previously. In a strange twist, he had been convicted for bank robbery in Seattle in 1964 where he worked as a barber.
Louis married again in 1987 so I assume his and Altecia's marriage was a short one. He died in 2000.

Arthur married Bessie Iryton Matson, daughter of L. Alonzo Matson and Rose Durst, about 1927. They had a son:
- Bruce A. Jenks born 1 January 1928 in Indiana. The 1956 and 1958 Fort Wayne city directories indicated he was married to a woman named Gloria. His most recently documented location was Pleasant Lake, Indiana, as of 1995.
In 1930 Arthur and his family lived at 211 Walnut Street in Butler in a house the couple owned, which was valued at $1,200. Arthur worked as a machinist at a auto repair shop. It seems the couple divorced not long after 1930.
On 31 December 1932 Arthur married Mabel Lillian Koch, daughter of Martin Luther Koch, and Martha Johnson, in Van Wert County, Ohio, where Arthur resided and worked as a farmer. This marriage did not last long either. By 1935 Arthur was living in Catlin, Illinois.
Arthur married Elizabeth Caswell on 12 May 1936 in Peru, Indiana. They both resided in Danville, Illinois, at the time of their marriage and Arthur worked as a coal miner. The couple had two children during their marriage.
In 1944 Arthur got a job as policeman with the State Police. He and his family resided in Tilton, a village in Danville Township. In 1951 he was working as a dock man for Merchants Delivery in Danville.
Arthur and Elizabeth's son died in 1979 at the age of 40. Arthur died on on 23 May 1989 in Hillsborough County, Florida. He was interred at Lakeview Cemetery in Hertel, Wisconsin.

2.12.8.4. Elizabeth Caswell (1914-1995)
Elizabeth Caswell was born on 13 January 1914 in Novinger, Missouri, to Robert Caswell and Margaret "Maggie" Muir. Her father was a coal miner. The family moved to Danville, Illinois, between 1922 and 1928 when they were listed in the Danville city directory living at 502 South B Street in Tilton, a village in Danville Township. Elizabeth was listed in the 1929 Danville High School yearbook as a sophomore and in 1930 as a junior. I do not know if she graduated.
Elizabeth married Arthur Edwin Jenks, son of Samuel Edward Jenks and Bertha "Birdie" M. Krontz, on 12 May 1936. He had been married twice previously and had a son by his first marriage. He lived in Danville and worked as a miner. Elizabeth and Arthur had two children.
When the 1940 census was enumerated the family lived at 25 North Jefferson in South Danville, but had moved to the Village of Tilton by 1944 where they lived at 508 South D Street. They moved to another house by 1947 at 500 South D Street, which was next door to Elizabeth's parents.
Their son, Robert Samuel Jenks, died in September 1979 at the age of 40. Elizabeth lost her husband and daughter in 1989. When she died on 5 March 1995 in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, she had outlived her husband and both children. She was interred, along with her husband and son, at Lakeview Cemetery in Hertel, Wisconsin.

2.12.8.3. Harold A. Sivesind (1905-1985)
Harold A. Sivesind was born on 21 February 1905 in Seattle, Washington, to Henry A. Sivesind and Julia Appelton. Harold's paternal grandfather, Hans H. Sivesind, had emigrated from Norway and his mother from Sweden. Harold's mother was a widow when she married Henry and was about decade older than his father, who worked as a plumber when the 1910 census was enumerated. Harold's mother died in 1911 when he was six years old. His father married Bertha C. (Johnson) Muggy the next year.
By 1920, Harold was 15 years old and lived with his father and step-mother. He worked as a stenographer at a wholesale jewelry establishment. In 1926 he worked as a driver.
Harold married Vanetta Katherine Irwin, daugher of William Henry Irwin and Carrie Vallelta about 1926 or 1927. She had been born in Los Angeles County, California, and when the 1930 census was enumerated Harold and Vanetta lived in Pasadena, California, and had two children:
When the 1940 census was taken Harold had returned to his home town and worked as carpenter. He owned his home at 8301 31st Avenue SW, which was valued at $2,400. He indicated he was a widower and had lived in Seattle since at least 1935.
He moved to Kodiak, Alaska, by 1953 and likely met Margaret (Caswell) McLaughlin there. They were married on 26 October 1953 in Seattle. By 1979 Harold and Margaret lived in Port Richey, Florida. Harold died on 12 November 1985 in Pasco County, Florida.

2.12.8.3. Margaret Caswell (1907-1992)
Margaret Caswell was born on 10 January 1907 in Novinger, Missouri, to Robert Caswell and Margaret "Maggie" Muir. Her father was a coal miner. Between 1922 and 1928 her family moved to Tilton, Illinois, a village in Danville, Township. I do not know for sure if Margaret moved to Illinois as she was not enumerated with them in the 1930 census.
Margaret was a woman of mystery. I have been unable to find her in the 1930 and 1940 census records.
Margaret applied for and received a Social Security account in Maryland sometime before 1951.
On 26 October 1953 she married Harold A. Sivesind in Seattle, Washington. They both lived in Kodiak, Alaska, and both had been married previously; Margaret to a man named Mr. McLaughlin. I do not know if they had children, where they lived, or what type of job Mr. McLaughlin held.
Margaret's husband, Harold, died in 1985 in Pasco County, Florida. Margaret died in August 1992 but I believe not in Florida. Her last place of residence filed with the Social Security Administration was Plant City, Florida, and her name was Margaret Sivesind. Seven women born in 1907 named Margaret died in Florida in August 1992, but none of them had the correct date of birth. Removing the year of birth from the search criteria, I discovered there were over a hundred women named Margaret who died in Florida in August 1992. None of them had 10 January as the day and month of birth.

Thomas Robert Ogden, Organist
Thomas Robert Ogden was born in 1957 and was the only son of Thomas Joseph and Elizabeth Ann (Fullerton) Ogden. I met him a few times as a child when our grandmothers would visit each other.
Thomas is a gifted musician. If my memories are reliable, as a young man, sometime between 1978 and 1983, he was an organist at the Vatican in Rome. During this period he traveled to the U.S. to give a series of concerts and invited me to a private concert for a group of music lovers at a home in Maryland in the Catoctin mountains near the Pennsylvania border. The owners had installed a lovely old pipe organ in their living room, which they had purchased when an old theater was demolished.

2.12.8.2.1. Thomas Joseph Ogden (1912-1998)
Thomas Joseph Ogden was born on 11 July 1912 in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, to Edward Francis Ogden and Estella Kelly. When the 1920 census was enumerated, the family lived in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and Thomas' father worked in a mill and his mother was a weaver at a woolen mill. The family continued to reside in Upper Darby when the 1930 census was enumerated.
In 1937 and 1938 Thomas Ogden was a right-handed pitcher for the Centreville Colts, a Class D minor league team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies, based out of Centreville, Maryland. His height was listed as 6'1" and he weighed 180 pounds. He pitched 28 games in 1937 and 151 innings in 1938. That year, apparently his last in the league, his win-loss percentage was 0.526 with a earned run average (ERA) of 4.89.
In 1940 Thomas was a lodger at the home of Earl and Florence Reichel at 502 Ontario Street in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Thomas worked as a clerk in a steel mill.
According to my grandmother's genealogy notebook, Thomas married Elizabeth Ann Fullerton on 28 October 1955. It is possible he had been married at least once before. The couple had one child and moved to Florida in the late 1960s where Thomas taught at private schools. Thomas and Elizabeth divorced in 1971.
Thomas Joseph Ogden died on 6 February 1998 in Hernando County, Florida. At the time of his death he lived in Brooksville. He was interred at Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens in New Port Richey, Florida, with Marie L. Bennett, who died in 1992.

Wabash Railroad
The Wabash Railroad was a large railroad system serving the mid-central United States. The first railroad to use only Wabash in its name began in 1877 and was a rename of the Toledo, Wabash and Western Railway formed in 1865. In 1991 it was merged into Norfolk Southern Railroad. Its main freight advantage was its direct route between Kansas City and Detroit without having to go through Chicago or St. Louis.
The Wabash Railroad christened the day train between Detroit and St. Louis the Wabash Cannonball, named for a popular folk song, "The Great Rock Island Route," making it the only train named for a song. The Carter Family made one of the first recordings of the song in 1929. The 1936 Roy Acuff version has sold over 10 million records. Each version included a variation of the chorus and eventually the song became known as the Wabash Cannonball.
Oh, listen to the jingle, the rumble and the roar
As she glides along the woodland, o'r hills and by the shore
She climbs the flowery mountain, hear the merry hobos squall
She glides along the woodland, the Wabash Cannonball
The Wabash Cannonball survived until the creation of Amtrak in 1971.

2.12.8.2. William Thomas Fullerton (1896-1959)
William Thomas Fullerton was born on 12 July 1896 in Carlisle, Indiana, to Clyde Fullerton, and Lila Collins. When the 1900 census was enumerated, the family lived in Haddon, Indiana, and William's father worked as a day laborer. By 1910 the family had moved to 1616 Meitzler Avenue in Danville, Illinois. William's father worked at a grain mill.
When William registered for the World War I draft on 5 June 1918, he lived with his parents at the Meitzler Avenue address and worked for Hegeler Zinc Company in Hegeler, Illinois. His appearance was described as tall and slender with blue eyes and dark hair. William continued to live with his parents in 1920 but worked as an electrician at a garage.
William Thomas Fullerton married a woman named Mildred. They likely had a son about 1923. By 1924 he worked as an oiler for the Wabash Railroad, where he continued working for the remainder of his life. William and his family lived in Tilton, a village in Danville Township. By 1926 he was working as a car inspector for the Wabash and he and his young family lived at 502 South B Street in Tilton -- the same house Robert Irene Caswell's parents lived in when they moved to Illinois.
William and Mildred Fullerton divorced on 20 July 1927. Two years later, William married Roberta Irene Caswell on 19 May 1929 in Fountain County, Indiana.
They likely moved to Detroit sometime before the 1930 census was enumerated. William worked as an inspector for the Wabash and they rented their home for $35. Living with them at the time was a 7-year-old son named Thomas. My assumption is that Thomas Fullerton was William's son by his first wife, Mildred. I am not completely positive this census record is for William and Roberta. Several things, like age, birth places, and occupations are correct, but William is listed as Thomas and Roberta as Alice. Unfortunately, we do not know who spoke to the census taker as a record of that fact was not kept until the 1940 census.
William and Roberta had a daughter in 1932 and by 1935 were back in Tilton, Illinois, where they lived at 502 South B Street, a familiar address.
By 1942 William had been transferred back to the Detroit area and worked at the Wabash Railroad's Oakwood Yards in Melvindale, Michigan. He was 6 feet tall, weighed 165 pounds and had gray hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. By 1947 William and Roberta had purchased a home at 2145 Morris Avenue in Lincoln Park, Michigan. William was listed in city directories as an employee of the Wabash Railroad through 1958, the year before he died.
William Thomas Fullerton died on 14 March 1959 and was interred at the Spring Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum.

Roberta Fullerton's Doll Collection
About 1967 Grandma took me on my first plane ride. We went to someone's 50th wedding anniversary party, visited with Roberta, Grandma's first cousin, who lived on the west coast of Florida. Then Mom's oldest sister and her husband, Uncle Bob and Aunt Ruth, came to get us. We stayed with them in DeLand, Florida, for a few days before jetting off to Miami Beach. Quite the trip for a 9-year-old girl!
During the trip, I was photographed with part the doll collection of Grandma's cousin, Roberta Irene (Caswell) Fullerton:

2.12.8.2. Roberta Irene Caswell (1905-1971)
Roberta Irene Caswell was born on 19 February 1905 in Missouri, likely in Novinger, to Robert Caswell and Margaret "Maggie" Muir. Her father was a coal miner all of his working life. The family remained in Novinger until sometime between 1922 and 1928 when they moved to 502 South B Street in Tilton, Illinois, which is a village in Danville Township.
On 19 May 1929 Roberta married William Thomas Fullerton, son of Clyde Fullerton and Lila Collins, in Fountain County, Indiana. Roberta worked as a bookkeeper at the time of her marriage. William Fullerton had been married previously and had a son. He worked as car inspector for the Wabash Railroad.
When the 1930 census was enumerated, the couple, along with William's son, lived in Detroit. William continued his work as a car inspector, a job he held for the remainder of his working life. By 1940, the couple had a daughter of their own and Roberta's step-son no longer lived with them. The couple had returned to Tilton, Illinois, and owned a home valued at $800.
By 1942 the Fullerton family had returned to the Detroit area where William worked at the Wabash Railroad's Oakwood Yard. The family purchased a home at 2145 Morris Avenue. Roberta lived there until after her husband's death in 1959.
She eventually moved to the west coast of Florida and died in Pinellas County, 28 December 1971. She and her husband are interred at Spring Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum in Danville, Illinois, as are Roberta's parents.

Children of Robert and Margaret (Muir) Caswell
For two of the children of Robert and Margaret (Muir) Caswell, the only evidence I have of their existence is the genealogy notebook kept by my grandmather, Alice (Muir) Jennings. She worked on her family's history with her first cousin, Roberta Irene (Caswell) Fullerton, a daughter of Robert and Margaret Caswell; so I believe it is mostly accurate.
According to my grandmother's genealogy notebook, his name was Robert Duane Caswell and he was born a year earlier, but the death certificate does not include a middle name and clearly indicated 27 February as the date of death.

The lives of Roberta Irene Caswell and her husband, William Thomas Fullerton, will be covered in future posts.2.12.8.3. Margaret Caswell (1907-1992)
The lives of Margaret Caswell and her husbands, 1) Mr. McLaughlin and 2) Harold A. Sivesind, will be covered in future posts.2.12.8.4. Elizabeth Caswell (1914-1995)
The lives of Elizabeth Caswell and her husband, Arthur Edwin Jenks, will be covered in future posts.2.12.8.5. Daisy Ellen Caswell (1916-1996)
The lives of Daisy Ellen Caswell and her husband, Charles Edgar Taylor, will be covered in future posts.2.12.8.6. Robert Caswell, Jr. (1922-1922)
Robert Caswell, Jr. was born on 27 February in Novinger, Missouri, to Robert Caswell and Margaret Muir. He was their sixth known child. He was born prematurely and lived only eight hours. His tiny body was interred at Novinger Cemetery in Novinger.According to my grandmother's genealogy notebook, his name was Robert Duane Caswell and he was born a year earlier, but the death certificate does not include a middle name and clearly indicated 27 February as the date of death.
2.12.8.7 John Caswell (after 1922-after 1922)
The only evidence I have for the existence of John Caswell is the genealogy notebook of Alice (Muir) Jennings, my grandmother. She indicated John died stillborn on 3 May 1922 but this cannot be possible based on the death certificate of Robert Caswell, Jr. Therefore, I believe it occurred in 1923 or later. The State of Missouri began requiring death certificates in 1910 so there should be one for John Caswell, but I have been unable to find it. It is entirely possible he died after the family moved to Danville, Illinois, between 1922 and 1928._______________

2.12.8. Robert Caswell (1876-1959)
Robert Caswell was born on 23 June 1876 in Rabbit City, Illinois, to John Caswell and Elizabeth Russell. I have been unable to find Rabbit City on any map. His father had emigrated from Wales as a young teenager and was a coal miner. Elizabeth Russell was born in Pennsylvania, but her parents had both been born in Scotland. When the 1880 census was enumerated, the family lived in Streator, Illinois, where his father worked as a coal miner.
By 1900 the family lived at 610 South Illinois Street, where his parents would remain for the rest of their lives. Both father and son, Robert, worked in the coal mines which surrounded Streator. Robert must have met Margaret Muir in Streator after she, her mother, and siblings emigrated from Scotland in 1887. The couple married on 3 August 1902 In St. Joseph, Michigan. St. Joseph was the county seat of Berrien County, a well-known "Gretna Green" county, a place with fewer marriage restrictions. Robert's younger sister, Mary Ann "Mallie" Caswell was one of the witnesses. The couple had seven children, though only four lived to adulthood according to my grandmother, Alice (Muir) Jennings, genealogy notebook. All of their children were likely born in Missouri.
By 1910 Robert and his family had moved to Nineveh Township, Missouri, where he continued working as a coal miner as he did his entire working life. On 11 September 1918 Robert went to the local Adair County draft board and registered for the World War I draft. The family lived in Novinger, Missouri, at the time, a town in Nineveh Township. He worked for Kansas City Midland Coal and Mining Co., which employed about 400 men. The family remained at that location when the 1920 census was enumerated.
Between 1922 and 1928, the family moved to Tilton, Illinois, a village in Danville Township, which was established to house families of the local coal miners in the 1850s. The family eventually owned a home at 501 South D Street in Tilton, which sometime between 1953 and 1955 became 501 Dellwood Avenue.
Robert died on 21 May 1959 and was interred at Spring HIll Cemetery and Mausoleum in Danville. His wife, Margaret (Muir) Caswell, died in 1966 and was buried beside her husband.

2.12.8. Margaret Muir (1884-1966)
Margaret "Maggie" Muir was born on 6 May 1884 in Dalserf, Scotland, to James Muir and Margaret Semple. She was born at Swinhill Farm, the farm her maternal grandfather rented. She was James and Margaret's seventh child, but only the second who lived beyond infancy.
On 30 September 1887 Maggie arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her mother, brother Robert, and half-sister Jessie. They had traveled aboard the S/S Manitoban from Glasgow, Scotland, and likely took a train to Streator, Illinois, where Maggie's father, James, worked as a coal miner. James had immigrated in June 1887.
When the 1900 census was enumerated, Maggie was a live-in servant on the farm owned by Sarah Dawson, a widow whose two sons lived with her. The farm was located in Long Point, Illinois, which was about 10 miles south of Streator, where her mother lived. Streator and Long Point were also connected by railroad.
On 3 August 1902 Maggie married Robert Caswell, son of John Caswell and Elizabeth Russell, in St. Joseph, Michigan. St. Joseph is the county seat of Berrien County, which was considered a "Gretna Green" county, a place where there are fewer marriage restrictions than in nearby counties. Maggie did not report her father's name to the civil authorities when they married, which is not perhaps unusual as he had abandoned the family around 1895.
According to the genealogy notebook kept by Alice (Muir) Jennings, Maggie's niece, Maggie and Robert had seven children with five surviving to adulthood. This was likely correct because Grandma Jennings worked with Maggie's daughter, Roberta (Caswell) Fullerton on the genealogy of the Muir and Semple families.
By 1910 Robert and Maggie lived in Nineveh, Missouri, where Robert worked as a coal miner. Maggie's half-sister lived in Novinger, which was about four miles from Nineveh. The family remained in Nineveh in 1920 when the census was enumerated.
Between 1922 and 1928, they had moved to Tilton, Illinois, a village in Danville Township, where I believe Robert and Maggie lived for the remainder of their lives. Robert died in 1959 and Maggie died on 29 August 1966. They were interred at the Springhill Cemetery and Mausoleum in Danville.

2.13.3.6. Cecil Roy Hess (1924-2006)
Cecil Roy Hess was born on 7 April 1924 in Russell County, Virginia, to Charles Robert Hess and Jessie Mae Fitzgerald. When the 1930 census was enumerated the family lived in New Garden in a house his parents owned, which was valued at $1,000. His father worked as a coal miner. When the 1940 census was enumerated, the family lived in rented home in Rock Lick, Virginia. Cecil's father still worked in the mines and had worked steadily for 36 weeks in 1939 but only about 20 hours a week.
Cecil Roy Hess married Margaret Elizabeth Muir on 24 October 1942 in Buchanan County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Robert Muir and his second wife, Elizabeth Fausz. Cecil worked in the mines at the time of their marriage. The couple had five children before separating in April 1958. On 1 December 1959, Margaret was granted an absolute divorce on the grounds of desertion from the Tazewell County Circuit Court.
About 1961 Cecil married Virginia "Jenny" Pauline VanDyke, daughter of Harvey VanDyke and Macy Nipper. She had been married previously but had no children by that marriage. However, she did have a daughter who was born about the time Cecil and Jenny married.
Jenny (VanDyke) Hess died on 5 January 2004 at the Russell County Medical Center. She was interred at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Cecil died on 6 August 2006 in Kingsport, Tennessee, which was where Run Ann VanDyke, Jenny's daughter, lived. He was also interred at Greenhills Memory Gardens.
