Robina Smith Riddell was born on 4 March 1898 at 9 Clydebank Terrace in the town of Clydebank to Thomas and Margaret (Brownlee) Riddell. She was named for her maternal grandfather, Robert Smith. He and his wife adopted Margaret Brownlee when she was a young child. By 1901 the family had moved to 102 Glasgow Road in Clydebank and Robina's father worked as a coachman. Ten years later the family lived on Barnes Street in the same town and Robina attended school.
She married Hugh McDougall on 19 November 1915 at his parents' home on 67 Crown Avenue in Radner Park according to the forms of the Congregational Church. She was 17 years old, lived with Hugh's parents, and did laundry work. It is not known if the couple had children.
Robina Smith (Riddell) McDougall died in 1972 in Glasgow. Her husband died 6 years later.
