2.3.6.6. Alexander Arbuthnot (1897-1975)

Alexander Arbuthnot was born on 26 August 1897 at One Park Place on Nelson Street in Largs, Ayrshire. His parents were Alexander and Isalbella (Gills) Arbuthnot. His father was a journey man tailor. When the 1901 census was enumerated, the family lived on Manse Court, but by 1911 they were back on Nelson Street. Alexander attended school at that time and worked as a part-time newsboy along with his younger brother.

He entered the Royal Navy on 10 November 1915 and was attached to the Royal Naval Division, which was made up of surplus men in the naval reserves, and fought on land. He was a baker at the time he joined the Navy and was described as being 5' 4" tall with a fresh complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. He was wounded at least twice and discharged on 27 August 1919.

On 26 January 1927 he married Mary Macrae Hart at MacKay's Tea Room in Largs according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. He was 29 years old, lived at 29 Royal Street in Largs and worked as a postman in the city.

Alexander and Mary were married 21 years before she died in 1948. He married Henrietta Riddell in 1952 in her home town of Hamilton, Lanarkshire. They were married seven years before her death. She had never been married before.

Alexander next married Isabel Hunter Cooper Wood in 1963. She was 57 at the time of their marriage and had never been married before. She died the very next year  in Largs.

Alexander Arbuthnot died on 25 July 1975 at Gateside Hospital in Largs of a cerebral vascular accident. Contributory factors to his death were hypertension and hypertensive heart disease. He was 77 years old and lived a 3 Allanpark Street in Largs. It is not known if Alexander had children.
