2.3.7.9. Francis Riddell (1907-1990)

Francis Riddell was born on 17 April 1907 in the town of Clydebank to Thomas and Margaret (Brownlee) Riddell. He was their ninth child and his father was a foreman of a carter's team. When the 1911 census was enumerated the family lived at 27A Barnes Street in Clydebank.

Francis married Mary McCauley on 26 December 1931 at St. Stephen's Chapel in Dalmuir, according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. None of Francis' brothers or sisters served as witnesses and I have wondered if marrying a Catholic caused tension in the Riddell home as it would have in so many other Scottish homes at the time.

Francis was 24 years old when he married, lived with his parents at 10 First Terrace in Clydebank and worked at a chemical factory. It is not known if Francis and Mary had children.

Mary died in 1974 and Francis was a widower for 16 years before dying in 1990 in Old Kilpatrick parish.
