Bradley Kenneth "Sonny" Muir was born on 15 December 1941 in Tazewell County, Virginia, to Robert Muir, Jr., and Sadie Viola Cline. He was eight years old when his parents divorced in 1949. He was a freshman at Richlands High School in 1957.

Sonny Muir married Sheila Ann Patrick, daughter of James Edgar Patrick and Iva Eleanor Asbury, on 29 November 1968 in Tazewell County. He and his wife lived in Raven, Virginia, in 2014, the year his brother, Bobby Joe Muir, died.

Sonny Muir has a son:

1. Bradley Shawn "Sean" Muir was born on 9 November 1968 in Tazewell County. He married Maria Rossana Ruiz, born on 13 May 1960 and a native of Lima, Peru, on 25 May 1990 in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The couple has two children: Catherine "Catie" and Sarah Muir.
