Roy Lee West was born on 31 August 1934 in Tazewell County, Virginia, to William H. West and Hazel Wriston. When the 1940 census was enumerated the family lived in Maiden Spring, Virginia, where Roy's father worked as a coal miner.
He married Bernice Faye Muir on 23 December 1957 in Lebanon, Virginia. Roy was in the U.S. Army at the time of his marriage and was a career Army noncommissioned officer. They had two children.
When he retired from the Army, he and Faye returned to southwestern Virginia where they live today.
