Joan Rita Findlay was born on 3 January 1955 at 4 Lindsay Road in East Kilbride to Charles and Christina Johnstone (Ramsay) Findlay. She was their only known child.
When Joan was three years old the family immigrated to New Zealand aboard the S/S Captain Cook. They left Glasgow on 17 June 1958.
In 1978 Joan was living in Auckland at 18 Karetu Road and working as a clerk.
