Children of John and Mary Lothin (Forsyth) Riddell

2.3.3.6.1. Oswald Dykes Riddell (1916-1995)

Oswald Dykes Riddell was born in 1916 in Dunfermline, Scotland, to John and Mary Lothin (Forsyth) Riddell. He was born the same year his parents were married. He married Jessie Sneddon Beverage in 1946 in Dunfermline and died in 1995 in Dundee, Scotland.

His wife, Jessie Sneddon (Beverage) Riddell was born in 1925 in Cowdenbeath, Scotland, and died in 1991 in Dunfermline, Scotland.

No passenger manifest has been discovered which would indicate Oswald immigrated to Canada as did his father and younger brother, David, or to any other location.

2.3.3.6.2. David Forsyth Riddell (1921- )

David Forsyth Riddell was born in 1 August 1921 in Coatbridge, Scotland, to John and Mary Lothin (Forsyth) Riddell. On 10 May 1924 he and his paternal grandmother, Annie (Cowie) Riddell, boarded the White Star Line's S/S Regina in Belfast and immigrated to Canada. He and his grandmother had been living at 30 Raby Street in Belfast before they left. They arrived in Quebec on 18 May 1924. Once in Canada, they planned to go to David's Aunt Annie's home in Montreal.  David's father had immigrated to Montreal the previous year.

On 1 September 1958 David's name was on the passenger manifest of the  Empress of Britain, which arrived in Liverpool on 1 September 1958. It had sailed from Las Palmas, Spain. However, David did not board the ship. He was listed as a soldier, who lived in Canada.

2.3.3.6. Mary Lothin Forsyth (1888-1970)

Mary Lothin Forsyth was born on 21 August 1888 in Dunning, Scotland, to David and Jessie (Peebles) Forysth. Her father was a baker at the time of her birth.

By the time the 1891 census was enumerated, the family had moved to 70 High Street in Dunfermline, Scotland. They lived at the same address in 1901 and in 1911. At that time, Mary was 23 years old and working as a shop assistant at a drapery business.

She married John Riddell, a spirit salesman, on 22 February 1916 at her parents' home on High Street. She was still working at the drapery shop as a saleswoman at the time of her marriage.

John and Mary had a son, Oswald Dykes Riddell, named after John's father, in 1916 and a second son, named David Forsyth Riddell, in 1918. David was born in Coatbridge, which was where John's family lived.

Sometime after the birth of their second son, Mary's husband, John, left Scotland and moved to Belfast. We do not know if Mary and the children joined him there. In 1923 John immigrated to Canada and his mother followed the next year, traveling with John and Mary's youngest son, David. I have been unable to locate passenger manifests that list Mary and their son Oswald so I believe they did not accompany John Riddell to Canada.

Mary died in 1970 in Dunfermline, Scotland. Her surname at the time of her death was Riddell so my assumption is at some point in the 1920s she and John separated and she never remarried. Her son Oswald also died in Scotland.
